Getting Lost In SF

So Thu H and I headed back to 580 California for our 2:40 appointment for induction at the Jejune Institute. Like I said before, it was a busy day for them. In fact, Saturday was supposedly the last day the induction would be held, so there were six other people waiting in the reception area for us to come back — they wanted to join us in the induction! (We let them join us for the introduction and agreed we would split up for the hunt portion.)

Be warned, the rest of this post details our adventure, complete with photos. I don’t think I’m spoiling anything at this point since Act 1 has closed, but just in case you want to unofficially run the game, like some people are doing now.

Extremes

My lack of updates over the weekend was due to two extremes in activity levels. On Saturday, I was out of the house all day, and on Sunday, I was in bed all day reading.

First, Saturday — Christine L and Jon K warned me that the Games of Nonchalance were shutting down, so I made plans with Thu H to check out Act 1 at noon. Ran some errands in the morning and caught the 1 line down there, since neither of us felt like fighting for parking in that part of town on a weekend.

It turned out, though, that word had really spread about the Games closing up shop, so we couldn’t just drop in. Made a reservation for 2:40 and wandered over to the Ferry Building to kill time.

We had lunch at Hog Island Oyster Bar, despite Thu H not being sure if she liked oysters or not. Turns out, she does.

I like the Naked Cowboy best.“
 – Thu H.

(That’s a type of oyster, by the way.)

Then we wandered around the farmer’s market for a while. There were a lot of things I wanted to get, but I didn’t think they would survive running around town with me on a scavenger hunt and then a bus ride home. Not to worry, though, I added them all to my mental checklist.

Stack Overflow

As I wind down on A Game of Thrones (should be done with the re-read tonight or tomorrow), I’m not sure which book I want to pick up next.

The obvious choice would be A Clash of Kings. I could go dig it up, I think it’s down in one of my boxes in the basement. I could pick it up in ebook form, but I’m not sure I want to pay $8.99 for the ebook version. That’s more than I had paid for my paperback, and I still enjoy reading paperbacks more.

I could also restart David Wingrove’s Chung Kuo series. Thanks to a conversation I had with Thu H last night about science fiction and fantasy books, I found out that his series was originally meant to be nine books, but was cut off at eight because of pressure from the original publisher. (No wonder I hated the ending.) However, a new publisher has picked up the series, and they will be re-releasing it, along with over 500,000 new words in material, in a 20 book (!) series.

The series will be getting two prequel books, which cover the rise of power of the Chinese government. (The series is set on a future Earth where China has taken over the world.) The first prequel, Son of Heaven, actually was released in February and I picked up the Kindle edition for $1.59.

Oh, and Isaac L, I haven’t forgotten about your suggestion that I pick up Hunger Games. Do you think I should buy it, or just borrow a copy?
