Swallow That

I should be trying to make up for sleep I missed last night, but I couldn’t resist jumping on the computer to check my e-mail and a couple of other things, so here I am now, writing up another update. :)

Yesterday… woke up at 9 again. Showered and stuff, but Drew and Peggy were still passed out, so I wrote a post. Drew got up and rushed his teeth and stuff and turned on the TV. We watched How To Boil Water on Food Network and mocked the “dumb” co-host. Drew’s theory is that she actually can cook, because she’s done several of these shows, but she just keeps acting like an idiot to make the “teacher” seem better in comparison.

Peggy woke up and we all had breakfast of bagels and fruit. Aaron L’s mom was supervising as Aaron L’s brother Michael and his girlfriend Katie were prepping some glass bottles for beer/root beer fermentation. Katie told us a nice story about how glass bottles can explode violently if they become over-pressurized while fermenting. Apparently she tried long ago with her dad, and they had fifteen or twenty bottles sitting in their basement. One day, they were just sitting around in the living room when they heard a “thunk,” and thought to themselves, “Uh-oh. That can’t be good.” Turns out they were right. Her dad went down to the basement to find glass shards embedded in the walls from the explosion. He put on his full gear (he was a fire marshal), and went about carefully disarming all the bottles.

Anyway, after breakfast, packed up and said our good-byes before heading to downtown Santa Cruz. Window shopped for a while. There was also an Antique Street Fair. No big purchases… just a couple of gags and potential LB gifts. We were supposed to meet up with Aaron L for lunch, but he had to stay late because his replacement at work never showed up at the end of his shift. By the time he got out, we had to leave to make it to Merced on time, so we did.

The drive was pretty dull. We got there just a little bit late. Only three UCM people showed up, though. I guess Alicia is now “President,” Alison is “Fellowship/Membership/PR,” and Tina is “Service.” Oh, and I supposedly scared Tina when I said service was “tough.” Apparently, everyone else interpreted that to mean, “Being Service makes Lovecraft’s Hell look like a tea party.” No, I actually don’t see it being that bad as long as they have enough people to do stuff (a full carload would be nice), because Bruce (The Librarian, and basically God of UCM), is on their side and has contacts and connections into everything in town.

After the meeting, we (the Iota Phi crew, because the UCM folks scatter to the winds after every meeting) rolled to a Thai restaurant because Peggy wanted to have noodles. She really wanted udon, but Lo S didn’t know of any place that served that. So anyway, we played “Black Magic” while we waited for the food. Minh T, Peggy, Mo W, and Mommy Van don’t know the game. Then quote happened as our food came out. Minh T and I were sitting next to each other; he had ordered pineapple fried rice, and I had gotten the house special fried rice.

Here you go.”

- The server, putting a big plate of fried rice down in front of me.

Wow, this is huge… would anyone like some of my fried rice?”

- Me.

Me! I’ll take some.”

- Mommy Van and Cedric.

OK.”

- Me, shovelling a good portion of the plate off onto their plates.

Oh… that was his rice, this is yours.”

- The server, coming back out with my real rice.

Good thing Minh T had just eaten Carl Jr.‘s and wasn’t really hungry, so he didn’t mind. In fact, he gave away more of “Dinh’s rice.” :)

After that, we rolled over to Oh Wow!, the Merced version of Nickel City, but Peggy wanted to go home, because she had chalking and an early class in the morning, so I took her, Drew, and Mo W back to Davis.

When we got home, worked on some more Service Fair stuff with Drew, talked with Will for a bit and did some service business, set up the new Merced mailing list, and then passed out.

The Loving Sounds Of Static

Yesterday…

Woke up — yeah, even in person I didn’t that great of job of keeping Peggy up and studying :o ops: — and took Peggy to campus early. Stopped to get some gas, and then went home and passed out for a bit.

Woke up again and went online. Wrote a post and saw that Peggy was back from her midterm, so I talked to her for a bit. We had to cover some housing issues. Joe M wanted to go get lunch, so we invited Drew so we could talk about housing with him, too. Oh, and Minh T was there on his lunch break. But we took so long, he had to box up his food and go as soon as it came out.

Back home, put up my random lunch post and talked online some more. Will N watched some more GTO, but I swear he’s seen every episode already, so he’s just randomly playing his favorites. Couldn’t take it for very long because I don’t like re-watching or re-reading stuff until it’s been long enough that I’ve forgotten most of it, and Will N’s had it on repeat the last couple of days.

Read some more of the Batman — No Man’s Land novelization that I started re-reading last night at Peggy’s. It’s an interesting perspective… you see stuff that wasn’t really in the comic books. Bummed online and kept checking if someone updated their Xanga or something, but no one did. Checked for new episodes of animé or chapters of manga, but nothing on that front, either. One of my three usual webcomics was updated. That entertained me for a bit. Went through every blog I have bookmarked. Joz is so interesting. I don’t know why I don’t check her more often.

Talked to Mommy Van about Psych classes I’ll be taking in the Fall. She’s quote!

Oh, the extra credit in that class is basically a book report. I did mine while I was kinda drunk and got full points.”

- Mommy Van.
“Wow, that’s a lot to live up to, mom. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to follow in your footsteps.”- Me.
“I set my standards high to challenge you guys.”- Mommy Van.

What a great mom, always setting the bar just a little bit higher, pushing her kids to do better than she did. Now I’m gonna have to get so drunk I black out before I type my report.

After that, I took a shower and went down and made myself dinner and watched some TV. More of the AMC Bond marathon. Last night’s Bond du jour was Live And Let Die. It was alright, but I think Roger Moore is probably the worst Bond, action sequence-wise. Oh, and of course, the big gripe I have about that movie is that Solitaire is supposed to be black, but that was too controversial, so they had a white actress play her in the film.

Got a call from Peggy around when the movie was over. She had finished up her shirts, so I told her to come over and hang out. Jackie came, too, and the three of us watched Ring 2. It was pretty lame. Stupid Americans can’t do anything right. Peggy passed out, and Jackie and I watched Madagascar because she hadn’t seen it before, and that way, she wouldn’t be thinking about Ring when she went to sleep.

Jackie went home after that, and I joined Peggy in the passing out.

Oh, since I couldn’t back up my old site’s database before it imploded, my Ring stories are lost, but I’ll probably write a post soon covering the weird shit that happened when I watched the video.

Time Is Honey

Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.”- Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

Just got back from lunch at Hunan’s with Drew M, Joe M, Minh T, and Peggy S. I think I seriously got spoiled over the day and a half I was at home.

Before I went home, I had been subsisting entirely on frozen burritos. And I didn’t even have the luxury of nuking them, since our microwave is broken. I had to heat them in the toaster oven.

The day I went home, I didn’t have breakfast or lunch, just in anticipation of food food at home home.

Yesterday, I was digging through the fridge after I got back from my dentist appointment, and found all the mixings to make a taco salad, so I started to make myself one. But it turns out we were out of tortilla chips, so I just got the most convenient starch present… some rice that my mom had made ahead of time for dinner.

OK, I guess at this point, you’re probably thinking, “What the hell? That sounds vaguely gross… how does he consider himself spoiled?” I guess the point isn’t lunch itself, but the fact that my mom, being the awesome mom that she is, keeps the fridge and pantry stocked with goodies, and I can always find something to munch on, whether for lunch, linner, or some crazy snack at 2 AM.

So yeah… Hunan’s was decent. (Honestly, I don’t think it’s as good as it used to be.) But it can’t hold a candle to home-made meals. First off, the quality doesn’t compare to my mom’s. And second… it’s all you can eat at home.

I think my stomach unshrank, actually. This could be trouble for me.
