Your Friend

Wow, it is incredibly hot right now. Much like it was yesterday.

Yesterday, I… woke up and went online. Took Will N, Terren, and Anh to campus. Wrote my posts and worked on the Assassins kill circle for a while. Kitty wanted to go to campus, so I went with her. Chilled in CoHo for a while. It was kinda dead, and everyone was a bit… edgy. That’s Assassins for you. Wanted to play BS Poker, but I forgot that I left my cards behind in CoHo last time we played because people wanted to continue after I left, and I never got them back. Instead, gave Linh a hard time about her homework boyfriend.

I missed DL so I called him and told him to give me the answers.”

- Linh.

Damn, you’re hella demanding.”

- Donna.

It’s OK, she’ll put out and make everything better.”

- Jackson.

Wait, no, he offered. He was supposed to help me with it, but his away message said he was doing homework so I called him and told him it was OK, but he said he was done and wanted to.”

- Linh.

Oh… he likes you then!”

- Donna.

He just expects something in return. That’s why you gotta put out, Linh.”

- Jackson.

Man, Jackson’s got a one-track mind. :) And did anyone else notice how Linh’s story hella changed?

Oh, and worked on the crossword puzzle for a while. Got about half of it when it was time for my service project.

Aiza and I walked over to the tennis courts and waited for Angela to come pick us up. She came with Will F and Eric AY, and we were off. The project itself was interesting. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. First we had to fill out volunteer forms and photo release forms. Supposedly they were going to have someone there that day to get pictures of us. Then he had us transfer stockings filled with toys, candy, and toiletries for kids from one room to another. They were leftover from Christmas, and the Food Bank decided to take the stuff out of them and use them immediately in other things. Then the fun part. They had just received a huge donation, and had a mountain of empty steel donation drums sitting outside. We had to move them inside and stack them along the rafters in the warehouse. So basically it was Aiza, Angela, and me running between the hot outside and cold warehouse with drum after drum after drum, dragging them up the stairs to Will, who squeezed them in as best he could. I was sweating profusely by the halfway point. And by the end I think I was slightly sick from going between hot and cold. But yeah, that was our two hours of service.

Angela drove us all back, and I asked to be dropped at CoHo. Chilled there, continuing the crossword and semi-waiting for my target to show up, but really just waiting for Mommy Van’s surprise birthday party. At one point, the fire alarm went off, and we had to evacuate the MU. What a great way to get your target to come out of hiding, huh? :) Hehe, no, there were no deaths that I know of in that time. And good thing, too. If a false alarm was traced back to APhiO, bad things would happen.

Jason G got out of class at 6 and the two of us walked over together. Good thing I went with him, because Mommy Tang told everyone the wrong address. (She says that’s what Eddie C told her, though.) Got there late, but was suprised to find that Mommy Van wasn’t there yet, so we just sat in back and played the waiting game. Mommy Van eventually came and was surprised. Then we ate. I wasn’t going to eat because I felt slightly nauseous, but Jen Liu made me eat half her salad, telling me she would just throw it away if I didn’t. Damn her and her force-feeding tendencies!

After dinner, we wandered over to Baskin Robbins for some ice cream. Then went home. I was goign to pass out, but couldn’t. Then Eddie C and James S were going to go swimming at Chaparral, so I went to say hi to Mommy Van again and possibly chill in the hot tub, and see if that made me feel any better. Well, the Chaparral crew was going to go to Café Bernardo’s, but they closed or were closing any minute, so I figured they would stay home, but instead, they went to Cantina’s. I was in swim trunks, and without ID, so I didn’t go with them. Instead, I feel asleep in the hot tub as Eddie C and James S swam laps.

Went home and passed out for real.

Beverly Hills

I suppose I should continue working through the backlog, so here’s a post about Chi…

Woke up naturally at 6:30 on Friday morning. Ew. That’s even worse than usual. I guess I was just really pumped about going to SoCal, though. Packed my stuff while chatting/watching TV/reading Xangas. I had to get as many comments as possible in since I didn’t know when was the next time I could be on the internet again. :)

Joe M called me up a little after 9 when he got out of class, and we met up at Brandon’s place. Took him to Walmart and Kragen to buy some motor oil and oil and air filters for a little car maintenence before the long haul. Back to Brandon’s, where we knocked on the door to get Brandon to come unlock his storage area to get his jack for us. Knocked and called for days, with no response from Brandon. Suddenly, of all people to open the door, it was Michelle J. Apparently, they drank a bit the night before and she had crashed in the living room. Got the keys for the storage area from a hungover Brandon, and got to work. However, the jack didn’t work very well on the incline, so Joe M ended up doing it ghetto with two spare tire jacks. (The second from Clayton’s Accord.)

After the maintenence, picked up Jenny, went back to Joe M’s place so he could shower. Ate. And then we were on the road to SoCal! Most of the the drive was alright, but we hit traffic on the 210 to Ian’s. At some points, it was actually completely stopped traffic. For no apparent reason. I hate that. I dunno if I could survive living in SoCal. Oh yeah, 210 also tricked us by suddenly splitting to the right, with less than a mile of warning. We didn’t make the turn, but it was kinda worth it. We went through an incredibly well-off part of town and saw a Lamboghini Gallardo. In motion, no less. Took a blurry dusk-time shot of it on Joe M’s camera phone, the only camera we had on us.

Finally got to Ian’s place at around 9 at night. Only about two hours later than predicted when we left Davis. Which was two hours later than we said we could leave. Had some BBQ and some birthday cake. Watched Harold and Kumar, then some random stuff, and then Hellsing, which has also been brought to America. Stupid American voice actors… they need to bring animé over and just sub it instead of dubbing. It’s cheaper, and fans will like it more. Asked all the Rho Rho folks to look for my IC Pen Pal Kristen Jue and say hi to her and take her picture for me. Played Mafia for a while after that. Quote of course comes from that -

Kill Joe M! Kill Joe M! Kill Joe M!”- Aaron L, wildly gesturing in Joe M’s direction while everyone was “sleeping” except the killer.

And the killer listened. I think she’s impressionable. :)

Then we got a call from Julie C’s car that they were close, so headed over to the hotel. Checked in and chilled for a while in Julie C’s car’s room until the neighbors started banging on the paper-thing walls, and then we knocked out.

Saturday… we were supposed to be there between 8 and 9 for registration. So of course sleepy-heads want to take full advantage of the leeway. Left the hotel around 8:40. Merry actually called me to confirm that we were going to show up. Good thing Chi also runs on APhiO time. Our first icebreaker was to tape a piece of paper to our backs and run around meeting people and writing down our first impressions on their papers. I got “jolly”… twice. I wonder if that word is bigger in SoCal.

First workshop was Boy Scout First Aid. Our presenters were very edutaining. Second I went to Drew and Aaron L’s workshop on how to have the Ideal Pledge Quarter. Originally to heckle, but I liked hearing about what other chapters did. After that was lunch! IPhi was loud and proud on the grass. :) I reenacted a scene from Super Troopers with the statue of the UCLA mascot. Then we took a chapter picture and Quyet, Brandon, and Jason G hopped on top of it. After lunch went to the LFS Forum workshop and heard Maggie Katz tell cool stories about APO Philippines. And finally the Hypnosis workshop. It didn’t do much, but I did feel less tired afterwards.

After that was the business meeting. A bunch of us decided to skip out on that. Joe M’s car plus Tom and Julie C’s car heaed back to the hotel. I guess the plan was at that point to meet up with Julie C’s friend and go out to eat. Personally, I kinda wanted to go to banquet. Yeah, catered food sucks. And yeah, it’s not our Section, so we probably wouldn’t get any awards. (Although we did end up getting Man-Mile.) But I mean… it’s what we came for, right? Plus just the… fellowship, I guess.

But yeah, met up with Vince and we went to the Standard Bar to eat. The building was really cool. The lobby is decorated in 70s art deco, the restaurant was like an old diner; we ended up eating in the… I want to say tiki lounge because of the woven furniture, but they had a desert theme on the walls. Chilled there for a while until the real lounge opened up… that thing looked like if Alice in Wonderland had a rave. Oh, and Julie C and Jenny wrote Chinese on me. Supposedly one hand said, “You are cute,” and the other hand said, “Wanna fuck?” I dunno if that’s true. Damn devil talk! The girls also started writing on each other’s boobs. I didn’t see what those messages said, though.

After that we were going to meet up at the hotel, find the after-banquet party, and go there. But the drunkies in the other car got lost, and some people were pretty messed up. So we stayed in. Oh, quote comes from drunk Jeannie trying to hook Vince and Julie C up in the car -

Hey Vince, say ‘em dep’ to her!”- Jeannie, because she and I were sick of the drunken devil talk.

Oh, and for the non-Viets, that’s how a guy tells a girl she’s beautiful.

Lost In You

Wow, Pledge Retreat was great! I’m so tired and sore right now, though. TV, possibly some sleep, then dinner and a BComm meeting. I’ll update tonight. Or maybe tomorrow.

EDIT: Blah! Peggy is such a slave-driver. First she makes me go to her place for a BComm meeting. Then I go home to sleep and she makes me update!

OK, so Friday… woke up at 6:30 because I knocked out so early the night before. Did my laundry so I would have some clean jeans to get dirty at Pledge Retreat. “Packed” for retreat. Meaning I threw any random stuff I thought might be useful into my duffel bag. Brought a change of clothes, swim trunks, a towel, my toiletry bag, flip-flops, extra socks (it’s very important to keep your feet warm!), a deck of cards, my MagLite, a hammer, a can of WD-40, a can of bug spray, a tube of sunblock, my throwing knives, my pocket knife, a fat Sharpie, a gel pen, my Leatherman, a Super Soaker, and a shinai.

Jason G came by and dropped off his stuff for me to bring. I thought it would include tents, but no, it was all pots and pans and five propane lanterns. Went by the bank and picked up rolls of quarters so if anyone needed them, I could exchange for them to shower. Picked up Quyet, Jeff, and Kristianne, and then we were off to pledge retreat! Yay! Oh yeah, had to stop to get my last passenger, Drew. Oh yeah, I should mention that we left Davis at 11:30 because I figured it would take about an hour and a half to pick up Drew, and then another hour to get to the campsite from his house. That puts me there at 2, the check-in time, to meet up with the chairs and help with all the set-up. In actuality, we got there at 2:30.

… Carol’s car got there at 3:30ish. And the next car showed up at a little before 6. Yeah, everyone and their mom got lost. There’s a lot of turn-offs with similar names. And the directions sent out led to the local headquarters, not to our campsite. And of course there’s the usual “APhiO time” lagging, so we had alot of time to kill. Good thing I brought so many toys to play with. (See list above.) Quyet went fishing for a while, too. Didn’t catch anything, but he did dig up some enormous snails out of the mud by the creek/lake/reservior. I dunno what to call it. It was too big to really be a creek, but it isn’t really attached to the reservior. (We were on the opposite side of the freeway from that.)

Oh, and my reception at camp… better than my reception in my apartment. What the hell is that? As as the other cars finally got there, we scrambled to get the tents up while there was still daylight. And to cook up some grub for the hungry, hungry hippos pledges. First night — burger madness! I supervised the cooking. The Takemori clan showed up on their way to TAK Retreat 2 down the road from us. Then it was just chilling in the grilling area for a while.

Friday’s quote -

I’m disappointed in you now. You can tell Joe M that.”- Mommy Van, after I did something bad.

Yes! In your face, Joe M! I win. :) I mean… I’m sorry, mommy. I didn’t mean to disappoint you. And I’m sorry about licking you, but it was the only way. Well, I guess I could have bit you, too. So in a way, I was being good…

Went to the TAK camp to bum off their quality foods. They had oysters, shrimp, chicken, and steak, in addition to hot dogs and burgers that were probably better than ours. They also had some stuff I didn’t want to partake in, since I was with the official group. Gotta set a good example for them pledgies!

Came back to camp for the “active meeting” where we discussed what was the schedule like for the next day, and just stuff to look out for and such with the pledges. Chilled some more. Then I realized… hey, it’s chilly. And there’s no fire. So I built one in the firepit with a duraflame base and as many dry branches as I could find. Bao came over and insisted on playing Ten Fingers aound the fire. I didn’t really want to play, but eh… fire warm. We played with a bunch of his kids, and I was doing surprisingly bad — only one more finger than Minh T for the longest time. I lost about halfway through the crowd. I think Izzy ended up winning? I forgot… the final three was Izzy, Sheena, and Haley, though. Finally went to sleep around 4. With intent to wake up at 5 or so and watch the sunrise.

I’ll write about Saturday tomorrow. For now, good night, everyone! Hope your weekend was great, too. :)
