The Road Not Taken

It’s odd how most weekends, I have absolutely nothing to do, and then comes along a perfect storm of invitations.

Besides being Easter weekend — which doesn’t directly impact me, but I thought it would reduce the number of things going on, since other people have family events — there was pledge retreat, Clint S visiting California, Genie L’s/Cathy K’s/Stevie D’s “Appreciation Dinner,” gaming with Isaac L’s Berkeley crew, and snowboarding with my sister.

The original plan was to head down to Santa Cruz, hang out with some old people and hit up pledge retreat, wander up to Berkeley to hang with Clint S and maybe say hi to Isaac L’s crew. (Sorry, Genie L, but I thought your dinner was another weekend under I saw the event on Facebook while I was at Aaron L’s place.)

I had some car trouble a couple of weeks ago and took it in to a mechanic in Davis. They fixed my coolant leak by replacing the water pump. However, my car started slightly overheating as I went over the hill into Santa Cruz. Things were OK while at retreat, and I topped off my coolant before heading back over the hill on Saturday. However, the temperature needle was hovering a little above the halfway point of the gauge, definitely higher than normal, and as I got into San Jose, the Check Engine Light turned on.

As I came up to the freeway interchanges, I was faced with the choice of fun or safety. I really wish I could have made the other choices, but I headed to Davis, where my mechanic is. And I just found out this morning that he’s not open on weekends. (Of course, it’s Easter Sunday, so it would have been a long shot anyway.)

So anyway, sorry to everyone I couldn’t meet up with this weekend!

Ghost Town

Halloween is almost upon us, so here’s a little something to help people get into the spirit.

That first link is a pretty cool site. It lists all the ghost stories submitted by readings, and they are organized by location, so that you can go check them out. It doesn’t seem to get updated too often, but I guess we don’t get new ghost stories too often, either. I think it was Jeremy J who showed it to me back when we lived in Suntree.

Like I’ve said before, I consider myself a healthy skeptic, but there’s part of me that wants to believe. So when Leena N told us about the Freeport Factory and we looked it up on the Shadowlands, a bunch of us were down to go check it out on Halloween.

Now, the way Leena N told the story was that if you down Freeport around the part where it follows the on a dark night, supposedly if the spirits wanted you to find them, the fog would part enough for you to find the entrance to the factory. As you approach the factory, there should be lights or sounds as if children were playing inside. If you can find an open door to go inside, you’re supposed to hold onto it tightly, or the door will slam shut and you’ll be stuck inside with the ghosts until morning.

A bunch of us — all of our apartment and Genie L’s apartment, plus friends, armed ourselves with Mag-Lites and packed up into our cars and set out. We wandered up and down Freeport, but we could never find the factory. After a while, we gave up, and someone came up with the bright idea of crashing a cemetery instead. We rolled up to the nearest one, hopped the fence, and wandered around. The scariest thing I saw that night was a huge crow that followed us around and watched as we walked around the cemetery.

Afterwards, though, I heard some weird stuff. The girls had discovered a grave for a little girl that died when she was only two, buried next to her mother. After we came home, Kitty K said that she started to hear a girl’s voice, and she would wake up with weird bruises on her body that looked like little hand prints. Mikey N was supposedly a psychic, and he said that he doesn’t like to talk about or use his abilities, but he talked to the little girl, who had followed Kitty K home from the cemetery, and they went back to the cemetery and got her to stay there.

Doesn’t that sound a lot more fun than that lame Halloween party you’re going to this year? :) You don’t even need to get a costume! Anyways, maybe I’ll post some more ghost stories as we get closer to the 31st.

Albino Loxodonta Africana

Last night, Jeremy J hosted a White Elephant party at his place. A good number of the old Laguna Creek crew showed up. Like usual, Jeremy J put out a great spread. Stuff to munch on like a baked brie and crackers while we waited for everyone to show up, and then steak sandwiches for the main course.

Then of course, was the actual White Elephant game. Everyone was a little confused on the rules, so there wasn’t a lot of stealing. Or maybe everyone just liked their first gifts. I dunno. Here’s some pictures!

While we were eating, we also watched Rush Hour 3 and I am Legend. Didn’t have very high expectations for the first, and it didn’t let me down. For the second, I had heard really good things and really bad things, and it ended up being somewhere in between for me.

I brought The Alphabet of Manliness, which went to Genie L, and ended up getting a Nerf gun from Andrew P. Besides that, Jeremy J gave me a “Class of 2007″ photo album. He also put my face on the cover and wrote “President of Ownage” and “Dizzle” on it. :) And David S gave me an army-type duffel with the kanji “Bushido” on it.

Oh, and I flipped through a book Jeremy J has called The Book of General Ignorance that’s pretty interesting.
