Racketeer

A few years ago, my mom’s side of the family had a larger than usual family reunion in order to celebrate my great-uncle’s 80th birthday. The older cousins (of which I am the youngest) planned a cousins-only outing so the adults could have a weekend without kids underfoot.

Originally, the plan was to borrow some cars and caravan to Wisconsin Dells, a resort town about four hours away known for its many water parks. While researching places to stay, I found out about Great Wolf Lodge, which has a game called MagiQuest. The website and reviews made me think of an extended “Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters” type of Disney ride, but fantasy-themed. Penny Arcade just described it as “if they had RFID at Hogwarts.” My cousins would have loved it. (Hell, I’d probably get a kick out of it as well.)

However, Penny Arcade went on to reveal a darker side to this game:

Apparently, the people who run MagiQuest have been playing some Recettear. I have nothing against them trying to turn a little more profit, but I really hope they aren’t pushing upsales on kids like this.

Anyway, we ended up not going because of time constraints, and went to Water Park of America (so named because of its proximity to the Mall of America) for a sigle day instead. Still a lot of fun, though! I got to try FlowRider, their indoor surfing thing:

Maybe we’ll try for MagiQuest again this summer. This year won’t be quite as big, but a good number of the cousins will find themselves in Minnesota again.

Silly Sunday

Spent most of this morning watching The Black Adder.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s great. The talent of Monty Python and Mr. Bean (and House, later on) combine to do an alternate history of England, starting with the “real” circumstances of the death of King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth.

It was a very interesting period of history, smack in the middle of the War of the Roses, which is the inspriation for George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series as well as for one of Shakespeare’s best-known lines, “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse.”

Oh, and I was also having LU Petit Ecolier cookies while I was watching it.

I haven’t had them in ages, but picked them up on a whim the last time I was at the grocery store. (Damn their endcap marketing genius!) When I was a little kid, we used to eat tons of LU cookies when I was staying up in Minnesota with the family. I don’t know if the name had anything to do with it (Lu is my mother’s family name, and we have a lot of Lu pride on the maternal side), but either way, they are ridiculously good. Petit Ecoliers were always my favorite, and I remember that I would always try to eat the cookie part first so that I would have a whole slab of chocolate at the end. Nowadays, I get extra dark chocolate ones instead of the milk chocolate I preferred before, but the game remains. It doesn’t work out too often, but trying is half the fun.

Anyway, I bring it up because knowledge and cynicism has made me question the name of these cookies. Why is their flagship product called “The Little Schoolboy” ? All of their other products are have straightforward names, like butter cookie or breakfast cookie. I feel vaguely Pedobear. Coupled with the company name, that feeling’s also vaguely incestuous. But it’s not enough to stop me from enjoying these. :)

Maybe I’ll pick up some more for board games later today at Tim C’s.

Elementary My Dear Watson

My sisters surprised me at my new place yesterday. They brought me some family photos and some food and watched me work and unpack.

We also watched the IBM Challege on Jeopardy. If you haven’t heard about it, IBM made a supercomputer named Watson that parsed Jeopardy questions in real-time and competed against the two best human Jeopardy players ever.

They played two games over three episodes, and there were a bunch of these background videos interstitched into the episodes:

The whole time I saw these info videos, I was reminded of Asimov’s The Last Question. Can’t wait for Watson to answer that.

In the meantime, Watson whupped ass, but I believe a rematch is in order. :)
