Have You Heard The News?

Some randomness for you…

On a grander scale, things suck as much as ever. Of course, you don’t really hear about most of these things from TV or newspapers. Maybe The Voice has a point. The mainstream news is so “packaged” nowadays. Good thing the Internet is forcing change by allowing other voices to be heard.

On the local front, there are no 7-Elevens in Minnesota. No Slurpees for me for a while, free or otherwise. :(

I also picked up a Rubik’s Cube from Target the other day. (Actually, I first picked up a Rubik’s Revolution, but that was a total let down! I thought that it was like a regular cube, but with an electronic brain in the center for the extra games. But no, the “Rubik’s cube” shell doesn’t move. It’s JUST the electronic game in the center.) So I opened it up after I got off work today and solved it. I think the last time I did that was in middle school. Right now I’m using the basic layer-by-layer solution taught by the little booklet that came with the cube, but hopefully by the time I fly back to California, I’ll be good enough at visualizing moves in order to use a more advanced solution.

All The King's Men

It kills me that this passed. (Check here to see if YOUR senators are to thank for this.) FISA has been bothering me for a while, but I thought it would die.

Not only did we expand the federal government’s ability to watch over our collective shoulders without warning or cause, but we retroactively pardoned the telecoms for allowing the government to do so before it was legal. (Which, if you followed that last link, you’d know Bush said the immunity was more important than the expanded powers. Why? He’s already been using them, but now we’ll never have our proof!)

Oh, and on a bit of a Bush legalities tangent… Congress has passed Bush’s bill pardoning his entire administration for any war crimes against Guantanamo detainees.

You can put a big ol’ check-mark next to Step 10. Make no mistake, we are teetering on a rain-slick precipice of darkness. And both of the major parties’ 2008 Presidential candidates are trying to push us into the abyss. I’m definitely rethinking my vote for Obama now.

Arg! Where is my Guy Fawkes mask?

I'll Be Your Man

So I was listening to news on the radio today, and there was a “close personal friend” of former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura on talking about how “the Body” is thinking of entering the race as an independent for the Senate seat that just opened up in Minnesota. He seems to be “angry” about the positions both the Republican and Democratic candidates are taking on the issues.

The point was brought up that even though Ventura hasn’t officially announced anything, polls are putting him at about 28% of the vote right now. However, he is a polarizing candidate, and people seem to love him or hate him. The friend said that Ventura’s best quality was that “even if you don’t agree with him, you know where he stands… He speaks his mind and doesn’t sugar-coat things.” I remember Bush beating that same horse into the ground when he was running against Kerry, who had been painted by his opponents as a wishy-washy flip-flopper.

Now, I respect and admire honesty and integrity as much as anyone else, but I’m sorry, what he said is a horrible selling point for someone running for office, especially for the candidate’s “best quality.” On any given day, I would rather vote for someone who has even the slightest chance of voting my way on public policy over someone I know with certainty will vote against my beliefs. That’s just pragmatism.

But even taking a step back, you have to realize that representative democracy is an exercise in group decision-making. To be a good representative, you need to be able to examine multiple perspectives, be willing to work with others towards compromise, and to just be tactful. Hold tightly to your own goals, but you have to accept that change is gradual in our system.

Hardline stance-taking is nothing more than bullshit posing, because it’s all about the median voter.
