Curses, Hipster!

I just watched the new episode of Portlandia, and I have to say, they are still doing an excellent job of mocking the hipster scene.

They also prove the Theory of Hipster Relativity:

(from Dustinland.)

In the above spectrum, I would place myself somewhere around the second (brown jacket) or third (ironic t-shirt) guy from the left. But I could see myself easily becoming the sixth guy — I like older fashions, especially bow-ties; and I am getting more and more into home-brew and general DIY. I find myself laughing at the ridiculousness of Fred and Carrie’s antics half of the time and going, “Oh shit, I do that!” the other half.

Anyway, I bring it up because of the Netflix sketch in the new episode. Not to spoil anything, but Show ▼

Thankfully, I no longer share my bedroom.

One for the Money

While I was working on the problems with my Kindle yesterday, I was intrigued by the Kindle ad for a contest to attend the movie première of Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money in New York, so I picked up the book.

It was a pretty short read and I pounded through it in just under a day — a fun read, and the newbie-female perspective was fresh. I can see Plum being taken in a lot of different directions, which is obviously true since there’s something like seventeen books in the series now, despite the fact that the first one was published in 2005. I have to admit, Katherine Heigl seems like a good fit for Stephanie Plum — she’s got the flustered female thing down pat.

Anyway, this made me want to read some more hard-hitting mystery. Should I re-read Sherlock Holmes? (By the way, have you been following the second season of Sherlock? So good!)

On second thought, I should try something new. What’s the best mystery novel you’ve read?

Fully Restored

Tim C and I just got to our hotel room near the undisclosed jump location and, of course, as soon as we checked in, I am no longer tired. So here I am, sitting in bed, munching happily away on a sadly no longer mouth-scaldingly hot McDonald’s apple pie (did you follow that train of descriptors?) and I thought I’d throw up another post before I knock out.

For some reason, this year came with more renewal than usual.

I had to renew my license, and since I got LASIK, I had to go into the DMV office and do their letter board test instead of just sending back their form in the mail. If you saw my tweet, you know that I was concerned about getting my new license in time for celebrations this weekend, since I couldn’t get an appointment until April 28th. Luckily, it did come in the mail this week. The new security measures are pretty crazy! I’m glad I don’t need fakes anymore.

Besides that, my Schwab debit card expired in April and I got a replacement for that. Then my credit card company told me on May 1st that a place I had used my card reported to them that their transaction history had been compromised, so my credit card was canceled and they were sending me a new one.

Yesterday, while I was running some errands, I finally remembered to replace the battery on my wristwatch, which had ironically died back on digital day. It feels good to have the familiar weight on again, even if I am no longer in the habit of checking the time on my wrist. It’ll come back.

Perhaps finally, this week’s NERT class reminded me that I need to make an appointment to go get my various booster shots. I haven’t had any since (showing my age, here…) ten years ago, when I got my meningitis and hepatitis (I think it was for type B) shots.

Oh, and my passport expired this year, but I’m not going out of country any time soon.

All in all, I am in many ways a new man!
