Hashing

Thanks to Fitocracy, I just found out about hashing today.

Hashing, which is short for Hash House Harriers. It’s an old British colonial game the redcoats would play to get over hangovers. Basically, one person is a “hare” and has a head start on a race. The hare leaves scraps of paper (or chalk marks) as a trail for the “hounds” (other players) to follow. It used to be trail running but some groups do urban courses now. There is no fitness requirement because the fast hounds have to slow down to check the trail and so everyone has a fair chance. The best part is that these events usually stop at a pub for the midpoint and always end at one for the finish line.

So it’s a children’s game with beer as a prize. How can you not be excited about that? I don’t think I can do the one tomorrow, but who’s down to check out an upcoming hash with me?

Or find one in your area with this site.

Dream Job

Despite never playing EVE Online before, after seeing the following video, I hella want to work at CCP Games:

Of course, that would involve moving to Iceland, which sounded like a very cool place until recently, what with the volcanic and economic crises. And the video seems pretty staged, but if those two guys are actually going to have a chessboxing match, I’ll want to be front and center to see it.

But yeah, I’ve heard of chessboxing before, but I thought it was a joke. Apparently, it is very real.

Too bad we didn’t think of putting on an event like this back in Davis. Then again, maybe we can still round up enough people to put this on. A civilized man’s fight club, now that we’ve all graduated?

Clearing My Head

I had some bad news yesterday (more on this shortly), so I went on a run to clear my head.

Went back to Immigration Point Outlook. Managed to jog all the way there this time, it took about 5 minutes:

I don’t know if there’s a name for this spot, but it was about 12 minutes into the jog:

And I made it to tourist central after 18 minutes:

Saw a boat on the way back, so I took a picture of that, too:

All in all, it was just under three and a half miles and took me 51 minutes — I ran downhill and then walked back up. Normally, when I run, I tend to focus on my breathing to point of blocking out everything else. Just couldn’t help but be distracted yesterday, though.
