Happy Endings

Just finished the first class in the NERT course. (More on that later.)

As I walked to the bus stop, I made an impromptu detour at Bi-Rite Creamery, which I had not been back to since Chi Ba and Mike E came to town. Tried the Coffee Sundae this time, and it was awesome. I’m a sucker for toffee bits. A happy ending to a good day.

Oh, and speaking of happy endings, anyone watch that new show? It’s a new sitcom about a group of young friends. (In fact, the girls seem to have a 1 – 1 correspondence to the girls of Friends.) The twist is that this show starts with Rachel leaving Ross at the altar. I picked it up for Elisha Cuthbert, but the chick from Scrubs is also pretty good. Daman Wayans seems so mellow, it’s weird. The other folks don’t stand out much to me one way or another.

Racketeer

A few years ago, my mom’s side of the family had a larger than usual family reunion in order to celebrate my great-uncle’s 80th birthday. The older cousins (of which I am the youngest) planned a cousins-only outing so the adults could have a weekend without kids underfoot.

Originally, the plan was to borrow some cars and caravan to Wisconsin Dells, a resort town about four hours away known for its many water parks. While researching places to stay, I found out about Great Wolf Lodge, which has a game called MagiQuest. The website and reviews made me think of an extended “Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters” type of Disney ride, but fantasy-themed. Penny Arcade just described it as “if they had RFID at Hogwarts.” My cousins would have loved it. (Hell, I’d probably get a kick out of it as well.)

However, Penny Arcade went on to reveal a darker side to this game:

Apparently, the people who run MagiQuest have been playing some Recettear. I have nothing against them trying to turn a little more profit, but I really hope they aren’t pushing upsales on kids like this.

Anyway, we ended up not going because of time constraints, and went to Water Park of America (so named because of its proximity to the Mall of America) for a sigle day instead. Still a lot of fun, though! I got to try FlowRider, their indoor surfing thing:

Maybe we’ll try for MagiQuest again this summer. This year won’t be quite as big, but a good number of the cousins will find themselves in Minnesota again.

Stealth Mode Disengaged

Wow, I’ve been under the radar for almost a week! Sorry, everyone. I’ll try to make up for it this week.

I went back to Davis/Sac last Thursday to do some car work. Unfortunately, it took longer than expected, and I ended up not coming back to SF until Monday morning. While there, I was on Gio Linh’s netbook and tried to avoid spending time on it.

Back on the car front, we did not finish everything I had hoped to get done. However, I do have power windows and power locks now! Thanks to Eddie C and Sum for looking out for me and getting this upgrade for me (and for free)! Sum even did the whole swap for me and let me use his wifi to work.

However, Dong Ha was disappointed to hear about my upgrade. Apparently, she thought that my car only had one window crank that was shared across all four windows. (I actually had all four cranks, it’s just that they don’t stay on, so they were usually sitting on the car floor. I kept one crank in the armrest area to have quick access for toll booths and drive-throughs.) Dong Ha told me she had planned to get me four Bedazzled cranks for my birthday. What a shame. Maybe she can bedazzle the new switches.
