Will N suggested to me recently that I need a hobby. I told him I do have hobbies, but he doesn’t think my hobbies count.
I think what he really means is that I need to get out and be social. For a long time now, I’ve been jobless, so I never really thought much about going out and doing stuff, which generally involves spending money.
Now that I do have jobs, I feel like I don’t have time for a hobby anymore. Judy T just talked to me about going to Yosemite, and I told her I’d be down, but my tutoring job needs a month’s notice when I’ll be missing work. (I understand the need for advance notice, but a month seems excessive.)
Anyway, I’ve been thinking about what I can do for this whole social “hobby” thing. I’m considering taking martial arts lessons again. It’s fun, active, and useful. But I need to find a good dojo.
Any suggestions? Or suggestions on another hobby I should take up?
Another thing I thought about doing again was community service. Either with APhiO (IPhi or GB) or another organization. But that probably means continually looking for projects that fit my schedule, rather than a regular weekly thing like the martial arts lessons would be.
A site I found for the Bay Area is handsonbayarea.org. You can see their calendar and find ones that fit your schedule. Unfortunately they don’t have a lot of projects, but it’s better than nothing.
OR, you can join a knitting club, now that you know how to knit!! I’m actually considering joining a book club… but that would just make me seem MORE old lady-ish than I already am. :’(
ooh, i wanna join a book club, that sounds interesting…
i kinda want to join a local hiking group or something like that.
Yeah, I know about the HandsOn sites, I checked out the Sac and Twin Cities ones when I was over there. Same problem.
I’m looking for something more active, so I dunno about the book or knitting club. Hiking might be cool.
Time to scour http//www.meetup.com
If that’s the case… why don’t we start our own hiking club?
Actually I just found a bunch of hiking groups on meetup.com. AWESOME!
but they seem a little old.
The groups or the people in the groups?
The people in the groups. I found one with a meeting this Sunday, another one next Saturday. I kind of want to go because they’re going to Vasona Park in Los Gatos and I really like it there. IT’S BEAUTIFUL! With a lake!!!
Archery
Ooo… another deadly activity I missed out on in childhood.
