It kills me that this passed. (Check here to see if YOUR senators are to thank for this.) FISA has been bothering me for a while, but I thought it would die.
Not only did we expand the federal government’s ability to watch over our collective shoulders without warning or cause, but we retroactively pardoned the telecoms for allowing the government to do so before it was legal. (Which, if you followed that last link, you’d know Bush said the immunity was more important than the expanded powers. Why? He’s already been using them, but now we’ll never have our proof!)
Oh, and on a bit of a Bush legalities tangent… Congress has passed Bush’s bill pardoning his entire administration for any war crimes against Guantanamo detainees.
You can put a big ol’ check-mark next to Step 10. Make no mistake, we are teetering on a rain-slick precipice of darkness. And both of the major parties’ 2008 Presidential candidates are trying to push us into the abyss. I’m definitely rethinking my vote for Obama now.
Arg! Where is my Guy Fawkes mask?
