Food For Thought

Keeping in mind what I just said in my last post, I will refrain from calling Mugabe an evil man.

However, I find his actions despicable. The most recent news out of Zimbabwe is that Mugabe is literally trading food for thought with his citizens. Starving villagers lining for international food aid are being forced to show their voting id cards. Those who belong to the rival party are forced to hand in their cards in order to get food. Without their voting cards, those villagers will not be able to vote in the presidential run-off at the end of this month.

This is after reports that Mugabe’s forces have displaced thousands of people from their homes by attacking and burning down villages. Since Zimbabweans register to vote by precinct and can only vote where they are registered, these thousands of homeless people are now also unable to vote.

Like I said, I don’t want to call Mugabe evil, but it sure is hard. He seems to value his own power and authority more than the welfare of his people, which is just opposite of all I believe with government and leaders. Whether or not the man is evil, though, his actions are criminal, and I hope that he is brought to justice.
