Blogging from my lunch break at work at the moment.
That service project I was supposed to do with the alumni association still hasn’t happened yet, but I’m trying to do service in my own ways. On Saturday, I took my uncle’s truck to go help a co-worker move. When another one of my uncles heard about this, he was like, “Why are you helping your co-worker?” I just told him I like to help people. He didn’t get it. He was like, “Are you dating her? What’s going on?”
Man, and I thought I was a cynic! Community service is really a foreign concept to most people out here. I don’t get it. And the uncle that was questioning me is the one who is probably the most successful in my family. (He’s the one with the NSX.) Makes me wonder about world-view necessary to be successful.
Maybe I should call him up (his family went back to Ohio on Saturday) and tell him that I DID get something out helping my co-worker. Three things, actually — a case of beer, some gas money, and a feeling of accomplishment.
You’ve always been one to lead by example. Applause!
wowwwwwww. this is really disappointing.
i remember two years ago, i was raising money for AIDS Walk Los Angeles and so I sent out an email to our relatives. Ong Ngoai sent back an email basically telling me that you can’t trust organizations like this and rather we should be supporting Vietnam War veterans. It was really really discouraging. But regardless, I still managed to raise over $500. This year when I was fundraising for it, I didn’t bother sending an email :X
Dinh… this is why we miss your present out here in Cali..
