Like I said in my other post, the decision to stick to the by-laws and to resign at graduation instead of staying around until the end of the term was a very hard choice.
The biggest thing holding me back from it was just the feeling that I had so much left to accomplish as President, and as an active. Like I have told several pledges in their interviews (although only one got to actually write it down), I think every position on ExComm is important, and I’ve wanted to hold every ExComm position, as well as every chair position, at one point or another in my APhiO career. I feel like I have ideas for all of them, and it would be easy for me to implement as many of those as possible while being President. I could make the best term ever be even better!
But then I realized that was pretty selfish and hypocritical of me. I’ve been telling others that leadership is more than just holding office, it’s in everything you do to make the chapter better. Sure, it would be easier for me to break (or at least bend) the rules and stick around and do the things I wanted to do. But that wouldn’t be for the good of the chapter. That would be for the good of me.
If one of my ideas will obviously make the chapter better, than I’m sure someone else has thought of it, too. That’s just the definition of obviousness. And even if it’s not obvious, I could suggest it to someone, and that would be a better test of how good of an idea it was. If I can convince someone else to implement an idea, it’s automatically better than something I decide on my own to push onto the chapter, because at least one person agrees it is in the chapter’s best interests.
It’s not about MY term being the best term ever, but about the chapter constantly getting better and better. Ideas and credit aren’t meant to be hoarded up, but shared with others to enrich all of our lives. That is why I hate copyright and intellectual property law, and that is why I now have no qualms left about leaving office.
Oh, and on a side note… last night was Sneak. I know there were some glitches, but overall, great job, Jadels! And Vince and I are thinking of holding a “How To Sneak/Counter-Sneak” workshop at the next CLW. Be there!
