The newest version of Ubuntu is out!

I had a problem updating my laptop to it, so I’m downloading the Install/Live DVD right now. Honestly, Live CDs/DVDs are such a great idea… you get to try the OS out without installing anything to your computer. The entire thing will run off the DVD. Then, if you want to take the plunge and actually install it onto your hard drive for better performance, there’s an icon on the desktop, and it’s as easy as pie.

Let me know if you want to borrow it!

Oh, and for those of you who are wondering how my experiment with Vista is going on the new desktop computer… It’s OK. They made it prettier, but it feels like it lost some functionality, which you guys know I’m all about. I really wanted it for DirectX 10 to play games, but my integrated video card isn’t really good enough to play the newest games anyway, and the Geforce 7900 I borrowed from Jimmy is giving me weird problems. Not sure what the cause is, but the screen, while functional, has bits and pieces at sharp angles. It’s like Picasso painted my screen, and then that was put through a blender.

Also, I found out that Vista and Linux don’t play nice with each other. When you delete a file in Vista, it’s treated differently than Windows used to, so if you access that same disk with Linux, it won’t recognize the freed up space from the missing file.

The combination of those two factors makes me really want to go back to Ubuntu on the desktop as well. But I’m going to need to find a place to backup all my files to again.
