Not much going on yesterday. Had lunch with Joe; he gave me an open invite to go visit his new place and play Settlers of Catan. That house was only introduced to it a couple of weeks ago, but have already gotten their own copy of the game, along with the 6-player expansion, and the Seafarers and Cities and Knights expansions. I mentioned this later back at Monster House, and said maybe we should get a copy of the game as well.
“If we do, I’m not going to play anymore. It’s too competitive!”
- Jimmy.
“But the whole point of the game is to screw others. Do you really think you’ll become vindictive?”
- Me.
“Are you going to be like, ‘No, you can’t have some of my bread, you screwed me last night with a colony!’ ?”
- Aiza.
I hope not everyone who plays is that intense. I like the screwing-each-other aspect. Without it, the game would be too random and not nearly as fun.
Anyways, here’s another fun link for everyone… Spot the fake smile. Aiza told me about it when we were talking about Psych classes.
I think competition can be healthy as long as it doesn’t get personal. Maybe it’s because I’m used to playing competitive games, but I don’t think it’s that easy to get personal over it or feel vindictive.
One easy way to not develop beef between players is to keep alternating who you’re trying to screw over in the game. =D Screw over Dinh one turn, then Aiza, then Jimmy, etc. Or, if you’re playing with people you don’t know well, try to screw over your good friend that you know won’t take it personally. During and after the game, joke around and be friendly. It helps diffuse tension, I think.
Oh, and you can always supplement your competing with flirting (people won’t feel beef when they’re flattered), but that might open up a whole new set of problems…

Thu, if you take my port I’m going to steal your bike wheel.

Also,
I put them all as genuine smiles, because I thought they were trying to fuck with me. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
I did get 50% though. You?

It’s ok if you steal my bike wheel. You still wouldn’t be able to ride the bike cuz I ate the seat already.
Oh, I got 16/20 correct on the smiles. I did it all really fast (the 3 second impression maybe) and looked at the eyes.

I got 14/20. I went with gut feeling.
