Well, after a couple of days of reformatting until I got things just right, I’ve got my new computer just about how I like. All my personal settings and little programs I like are running; at least on the Windows partition. For the Linux side of things, I’m trying Slackware instead of Kubuntu, and it’s taking some time for me to learn everything.
The biggest reason I wanted a laptop over a desktop for my next computer was so keep my personal workspace consistent no matter where I was trying to use a computer. I really like having the programs I like using for certain tasks ready, instead of trying to either learn someone else’s preferred program or downloading mine for them. So yeah, it was either get a laptop, or live off a Linux-boot USB drive. Which is cool in theory, but I can see that getting very annoying.
Anyway, the one exception to this state of general readiness is my anti-virus/network safety program. I was going to legally buy a copy of Kaspersky Internet Security for this computer because I liked it so much when I used a downloaded version. The only problem is, their website uses some weird “Verified by Visa” program that keeps declining my credit card. I’ve been able to use my card at other sites fine, and I know i have enough money in my account, but it’s been declined three times. I don’t get why some people have to make it so hard to use their product. It makes people like me want to either use an illegal version or a competitor’s version!
I’m going to give them one last chance by borrowing someone else’s card and paying them back with a check. Otherwise, I’ll be more than happy to use the Norton AV that came with my laptop, bloated as it may be. Or maybe I’ll try out the free Sophos AV that UCD offers to students.
